PERRY LANE is a narrow laneway that runs between Oxford Street and Underwood Street in Paddington. Smack in the middle, near the intersection with Belmore Place, is the tiny café, Not Just Coffee.
Perry Lane Art Project was the initiative of local resident Ashley Woodcroft, who gained the support of Woollahra council and building and business owners to transform the lane from a simple thoroughfare into a creative space enlivened with public art.
The project was officially launched in May 2017 with the unveiling of two murals: Nastia Gladuschenko aims to reduce stress and improve mental health with her image of a human hand with a flower, referencing the blooming of the laneway and bringing natural elements to the built environment. Swiss-born Andre Braun’s image of a monumental hand extending out of a picture frame to offer a symbolic apple to a lone dog creates mystery and fires the imagination.
Coinciding with the nearby William Street Fair on 21 October 2017, Seeing and Being Seen will bring the laneway to life with performance, sound, sculpture and the painting of additional murals, creating an art event to engage the local community and visitors.
